personal statement About myself and my work:

I am an independent artist with background in diverse fields, including naval submarine service, electronics, broadcast and computer technology, print and photojournalism, graphic design, filmmaking and painting, and commercial photography. My current interests include studies of consciousness, process-oriented psychology and eco-psychology.

With my wife Susan Cogan and our daughter Ora Cogan, both immensely gifted singer-songwriters, I live on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada.

In 2004 I discovered the World Wide Panorama Project on the Internet, and the panorama collections of Danish photographer Hans Nyberg and was immediately attracted to this form of photography.

Along with being able to share my vision of my community and the places where I live and travel to, I enjoy creating images that reflect my very personal, internal visual experience and feelings. Interactive panoramic photography that includes everything visible within a 360º sphere appears to me as an unusual, and quite challenging artistic medium.

first image caption This panorama was taken as my contribution to the World Wide Panorama event “Diversity” on the Spring Equinox of 2009. Pearson College is a unique 2-year pre-university school that brings 200 students from 100 countries to live and learn together in a small seaside village on Canada’s stunning pacific coast. All students attend on full scholarship and are selected based on promise and potential, regardless of race, religion, politics or financial means.

Technical note: this is a ‘Stereographic’ or ‘Little Planet’ projection of a 360º spherical image, 8 shots, taken with a Nikon D300 camera and a 10.5mm fisheye lens and a Nodal Ninja pano head. Software used: PTGui Pro, Pano2VR, Adobe Photoshop.

second image caption The World Wide Panorama event “Elevation” occurred on the Summer Solstice, 2008 when I was recovering from an operation. Meditating outside certainly helped my healing, and my feeling “high” seemed to fit the “elevation” theme perfectly; a bit of editing in Photoshop helped to establish altitude.

Technical note: This is an HDR (High Dynamic Range) cylindrical projection of a 360º panorama taken using 3x8 shots with a Nikon D300 and a 10.5mm fisheye lens and a Nodal Ninja pano head. Software: PTGui Pro, Pano2VR, Photomatix Pro, Adobe Photoshop.
